JSW – an environmentally and socially conscious and responsible company

Expert feature

The European Union has formulated very clear expectations for the market – economies must start operating in a sustainable manner. That means that they should act in such a way that the meeting of the needs of the current generation does not reduce the chances of meeting the needs of future generations.

The Green Deal being introduced by the European Union can be recognized as one of the greatest common challenges being pursued by the economies of all the countries that make up the European Union today.

The difficultly of this challenge is best demonstrated by the implementation and management of ESG in a company like JSW S.A., a mining conglomerate, engaged in the acquisition and production of coking coal, which is classified as the European Union’s strategic raw material and is the basis for Europe’s green energy transition. The Company is the only one in the EU to mine coking coal, making Europe independent of supplies of this raw material from, among others, Russia and Asia. Unfortunately, for most of the public, coal is associated with fuel mined for power and heating, a fuel that, according to EU regulations, is to be eliminated by 2050.

JSW is not subject to mining decommissioning regulations, but is fully subject to the Green Deal rules, which means it must be 100% climate neutral by 2050. The Company is aware of this, which is why it was the first mining group in Poland to publish an ESG report. This was a pioneering venture for the Company, as it had no source to draw models and experience from. In Europe, coking coal mining is negligible, and global corporations are not implementing any regulations.

For years, the JSW Group’s good practices and activities have been recognized in reports by the Responsible Business Forum, and integrated reports have been awarded in competitions (The Best Annual Report organized by the Institute of Accounting and Taxation, 1st place in the integrated report category for 2021). In 2022, we undertook a number of activities for which we were many times recognized. We have started, for the first time, reporting on climate issues in the international CDP rating and received a high “C” rating.

JSW was also ranked among the most climate-conscious companies in the 4th edition of the Company Climate Awareness Survey. We take a number of initiatives to support local communities, which are appreciated by expert organizations active in the field of promoting and initiating best practices in sustainable development and CSR.

The transition we are going through requires a deep rethinking of all business processes. It is a complete change of approach not only within our immediate business relationships, but also the entire supply chain. We are implementing the ESG strategy because we want to change our region for the better.
