Torsten Wöllert – representative of the Support Group for Ukraine will speak at the 12th Europe-Ukraine Forum.

The aim of the Support Group for Ukraine (SGUA) established in 2014 is to support Ukraine in the process of political and economic reforms. SGUA was created as a Task Force, its goal is not only the financial support but also technical assistance by the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU. The operational staff of the Support Group is drawn from a wide range of European Commission services, experts seconded from national administrations and contracted staff.

One of the members of the SGUA, Torsten Wöllert, Team Leader Energy and Environment will be one of guests of the 12th Europe-Ukraine Forum and will speak in the debate on the Challenges for the Electricity Market in the Region. One of the key problems Ukraine has to deal with is very law energy effectiveness, resulting in high level of energy poverty. According to Torsten Wöllert, one of key elements that may improve this situation shall be civil engagement. “It is the role of citizens that shall be the leading force to improve the energy effectiveness in Ukraine”. The role of the non-governmental organizations played a crucial role in this process. They have established cooperation with international partners, gathering know-how in the process of improving the energy effectiveness as well as how to finance those kind of projects.

Torsten Wöllert, Team Leader Energy and Environment in the Support Group for Ukraine has joined European Commission in 1995.  Before joining the EC he held positions in the European telecommunications industry. At the European Commission he extensively dealt with EU energy supplies, energy efficiency, support to innovation and EU-Russia energy relations.
