Exploring Cities Shift from ‘Rurban to Urban’ – The Urban Finland Blog

The well known Finnish bloger Timo Hämäläinen will take part in 28th Economic Forum. His blog “The Urban Finland Blog” is devoted to cities and urban life.

The Urban Finland blog is a project of Timo Hämäläinen to highlight and discuss contemporary issues relating to cities and the urban environment. Since its launch in 2012, the blog has developed a global following and has been noted among the ’best city blogs around the world’ by The Guardian.

Looking from the Finnish and global perspectives, the blog examines the inner workings of urban development in a time of emerging new priorities for building successful and competitive cities. In the early years of the 21st century, it has become clear that powerful drivers such as climate change, new technologies, demographic trends, the changing nature of work, and people’s evolving societal value base are intensely shaping the way people want to live.

Across the world, the low-density, ‘rurban’, pattern for developing cities and neighborhoods is slowly coming to an end. A new, more localized ‘urban’, model is taking over.

Parallel to advancing discussions in urbanism, Timo’s blogging activities relate to the rapidly changing landscape of today’s workforce. The rise of independent urban professionals who navigate between the global and the local and form networks around different fields is a leading trend that thrives in cities.

Timo will share key insights and experiences from his work at the Economic Forum.
