20th anniversary of the Economic Forum
In 2010 the Economic Forum celebrated its anniversary. Since the very beginning the forum has been accompanying the changes in our region, and at the same time it has been creating them. The meetings in Krynica started from discussions held by a hundred participants. Slowly, more and more participants joined us. After a few years, the top politicians entered the forum. Then, the top politicians considered it rational that their counterparts from other countries should arrive in Krynica, too. Therefore, the forum became not only a meeting point for entrepreneurs and experts, but also an important destination for the region's most powerful politicians. The Economic Forum is characterised by its constant growth. The number of visitors in Krynica grows and the number of companies and institutions grows, too. There are still new countries represented at the forum. The twenty-year growth was completed symbolically by participation in the anniversary celebration of the most important authorities of the European Union: President of the European Union – Jose Manuela Barroso, President of the European Parliament – Jerzy Buzek, President of Poland – Bronisław Komorowski and President of Estonia – Toomas Hendrik Ilves. There were also numerous ministers of the governments of Germany, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Luxembourg and France.
The forum is being more and more appreciated by entrepreneurs. It offers an exceptional chance to exchange achievements and plans and learn of possible cooperation, but it also facilitates debates in a group of top quality business practitioners and theoreticians. The formula of the meetings in Krynica involves all participants in the intellectual dialogue and enables them to share observations
and fears. In Krynica people do not meet to present their offers only, but also to exchange conclusions and guidelines. For many years other initiatives have been developed under the common logo, such as the Forum of Regions (for five years in Muszyna), Investment Forum in Tarnow and Innovations Forum in Rzeszow. The most influential politicians, entrepreneurs, and representatives of culture and science come to meet the Young Leaders and to share their experiences with them, as well as to listen to them. All of this makes the forum in Krynica an awaited and needed event, an event that one must take part in. I would like to thank you for your interest and understanding, and also invite you to the next edition of the forum.
Chairman of the Economic Forum Programme Council
Jubilee – it’s worth talking!
This was the 20th time the Economic Forum was on the agendas of the most influential politicians in the European Union and Poland, persons from many countries, distant and close neighbours. Initiators of the European Union undertook a real challenge. The Union has been building the common economic and political area framework step by step. One of the major stages of the development was the Treaty of Lisbon that entered into force formally on 1st December 2009. Europe after the Lisbon Treaty. Strategies for the Future was the motto and essence of the discussions held in Krynica in 2010.
What are the strategies for the future adopted by Europe? This key question opened the debates of the 20th Economic Forum. Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, making his introduction to the discussion during the opening plenary session tried to answer the question of how the Union operates now. In his opinion, the European legislation and decision-making table has been supported by one more leg. And one of the remaining three legs has been considerably strengthened.
Dynamic changes set new challenges to the whole world, but also to the European Union, being an extraordinarily complex organisation. In his discourse, Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, stated that nowadays nobody has doubts about the extent of interdependence between the European Union and the world. Mr Barroso stated that within the EU we have become even more interdependent. Crisis in one country can affect the whole European Union, which refers not only to the Eurozone. Therefore, European thinking and global action is necessary. In Mr Barroso's opinion particular countries used to consider reforms in terms of microeconomics, but now we need to think in terms of macroeconomics, from the perspective
of the whole Union. Therefore, now, Europe needs to promote a real economic union. This is a clear lesson from which we should draw conclusions now. Poland is facing a very important task. In 2011 the EU presidency will be taken up by Hungary and Poland, successively. They will be able to play an
important role in forming EU policy. What are the Polish priorities offered to the whole Union? President Bronisław Komorowski replied to the question. In the President's opinion the world's multipolarity is undisputable and creates quite new challenges and new opportunities. The Treaty of Lisbon is still an incomplete, but no ldoubt correct, response to all the hopes and fears that we share. The essence of the response is that all the EU states agreed on common solutions. In the President's opinion, a major objective for the Polish presidency is that it should ensure maintenance of the belief that the Union wants to keep its open character, that it wants to invite all countries fulfilling the criteria and willing to belong to the European family also through the functioning of societies, countries, through relationships between the authorities and society, between the business and state. The openness of the Union should be obvious and constitute a huge task for the Union as a whole.
